940 tranny question 900 1995

I have noticed that the tranny in my '95 940 is a bit slow on the downshift into 1st when I come to a slight rolling stop, and sometimes even when I come to a complete stop. If I'm not careful when I take off it can start moving in 2nd, then slam down into 1st. I'm sure that's not good for the tranny. When I drive the car, I have gotten into the habit of placing my hand on the shifter to feel for the downshift. I have asked my wife to do the same, since she drives this car much more than I do. With the last oil change I also drained the tranny fluid and topped off with two quarts of fresh fluid, but I have not driven the car much to see if it changed anything (I was too busy replacing the head gasket). The fluid does look more brown than pink, so It seems like a flush is due. What are the chances that a flush will cure this? The tranny shifts perfectly otherwise. I was thinking about a more gradual flush, 2 quarts at a time with every oil change, since Volvo made it easy by putting a drain plug inthe tranny pan. Which way would be better?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

    ANSWER 940 tranny question 900 1995

I would favor a flush as described in the FAQ's. Consider doing the flush with cheapy fluid then go over to Mobil 1 synthetic fluid. Expensive but it has been known to cure shifting problems when a flush would not. On my old 88 740 I "cured" a harsh shifting problem from 1st into 2nd after going over to synthetic.

      940 tranny question 900 1995

I used the flush method as described in the FAQ. I used Valvoline High Mileage tranny fluid, and it seems to have done the trick. I flushed 12 quarts through, just to be on the safe side. As noted in the FAQ, the fluid did start to appear clean at about 9 quarts. It did the 2nd gear take-off once more, but has been working great since. Thanks for the advice.

      Thanks, David.

I'll start gathering what I need for the flush soon. I'll probably stick with conventional fluid for now and see how things go.
