oil breather box-looking for photo 700 1992

We are having trouble finding exactly where the breather box is, and how to access it on our 92 740 Turbo wagon. Can someone post a photo, or show me a link to a photo of it's location? Thanks.

Well, it is my husband who has been working on the car, not me. He has been working a lot of OT so I have posted for him(much to his chagrin).
It appears to be leaking from the timing cover gasket, or the front or intermediate crank seals, which he replaced a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, he replaced the timing cover gasket again, as one small spot on the gasket had a lot of oil on it. He also cleaned the PVC valve, and a tube appearing to go from there to the Turbo. Today, after work, he will cross his fingers and start the car.

There is no gasket on the timing belt cover, do you mean the valve cover? To deal with a leak you must observe exactly where the leak originates, the correction will depend on what and where it is leaking. There is no use just replacing things hoping to cure it.

Under the timing belt cover there are 3 seals:
Intermediate shaft seal.
Camshft seal.
Crankshaft seal.
After removing the cover it is easy to see which is leaking.

Sounds like he might have allowed the lip of the seal to roll over when installing the seal(s) or installed them dry. The spring on the back side can slip off if the lip rolls over on installation making them prone to leaking. Installing them dry can cause them to "hang up" on their shaft upon startup and damage them as well.

I doubt a clogged flametrap or oil seperator would become apparent only after servicing the seals. I am only guessing but something must be amiss with the seals.

I guess it could be the gasket if in fact he removed the cover to replace the seals.

Randy

Mevin:
Here's a link to photo details of the oil breather box:
http://www.mikeponte.com/volvo/oiltrap.htm . Also located in the FAQ. Lots of info there as well regarding troubleshooting of possible oil pressure-related problems - always worth a look.
Let us know if this helps.

As David indicated you can check for air flow restrictions by attaching a hose to the opening on the top once you remove the hose that is in place at this point.

Simply push a length of 1/2" hose on to the top and remove the oil filler cap before blowing into the hose. There should be no restriction to the applied pressure with the cap off.

Driver side towards rear 4 under intake manifold. Large rectangular black plastic box with hose going to it. If you suspect it is plugged it is simple to test by blowing back down through it rather than try to remove it unnecessarily. It is rather difficult to get out.
What are you trying to fix?

we are trying to fix an oil leak. You can look under the post by arterial turns 740 oil seals issue.
We had an oil leak, replaced the front and intermediate cam shaft seals, hvalve cover gasket, timing cover, gasket, timing belt, harmonic balancer, sprocket and washer. I think that's it. Anyway, now when it is put back together, it starts dripping immediately when you start the car, whereas before, it was just a leak. Several people have recommended cleaning the breather box.

From where is it dripping?

It appears to be leaking from the timing belt cover. My husband put yet another new gasket on it, and it began leaking again shortly after starting it up. (Plus somebody siphoned our gas!). Tomorrow we will take it to the shop.
