How do I check for bad tie rods? 200

My '83 245 has developed a rattling noise in the front end that you can feel in the steering wheel when you hit a bump. I'm thinking it may be a bad tie rod. Can someone tell me the best way to check? Also, when my wheel is turned full right (esoecially when backing up) the right front feels like it is running over something once for every revolution. What do you all think this is? Thanks.

ANSWER How do I check for bad tie rods? 200

The quick way to check is to jack one wheel and then shake it, with your hands at 3- and 9-o'clock to feel for any looseness. If you shake at 12- and 6-o'clock, you can test the ball-joints for wear.

If you do redo the tie-rods, be certain to get the car re-aligned.
