1997 Volvo 960 Car Alarm sounds when opening door. 900 1997

I've started running into this problem about a year ago. I do not have a keyless entry system set up, when I attempted to set one up the car for some reason was not able to recognize the remote. Anyways, when i lock the car manually, everything locks fine.

About every 10th time I unlock the car, upon opening the door the car alarm goes off. This prevents me from starting the car and I have to wait long periods of time locking and unlocking the car until the alarm no longer sounds. Just wondering if anyone has any advice, I took it to the local volvo dealership and they said clipping the wire connection the doors to the security system could ruin many features of the dashboard.

All I want to do is be able to lock/unlock the doors. I was debating many options, not sure if anyone has tried any of them but maybe its possible to replace the locks themselves

Does your car have an alarm and/or remote unlock system? Do you have a remote transmitter (fob) for it? On my 1997 965 the " alarm on" indicator is a little thing with a red LED on the dash right side speaker grille. Alarm set indicated by the flashing LED.

Check with a dealer in need be. Have your VIN and proof of ownership handy. If your car has a system, you can buy a fob on eBay for about 1/2 the dealer cost. My car came with no fobs, I bought 4 off eBay, they all work.

Programmong instructions are in your Owner's Manual.

I am under the impression that all the later models (1995 -1998 S/V90) came with the alarm and keyless entry systems

    Good Luck,

I know there is some sort of alarm system, because it sounds when opening the door after manual unlock...I do not have a keyless system set up, I have no clue if there was one set up before I bought the car used from a dealer. I know about the red light that you're talking about...what does that red light mean though? Is there a way of knowing when the system is on, and if so is there a way to disable it?

      thanks

The system is armed when the red LED is flashing in about a 1 second interval.

I believe that working to disable the system would be more effort than getting a transmitter, programming it, and using the system.

If you look on eBay (where I bought my four) you will see a dazzling number of transmitters, even in the VOLVO search. The 1995-6-7-8 960 and V/S/90 transmitters have just two white buttons, a large one maybe a half-inch square-ish, with another half that height right below it. The top button is marked "Lock, Panic" and the lower one is "Unlock".

Many other transmitters, aka fobs, have buttons of many colors and orientations.
The sellers will likely know less about Volvos than you and I do. If you find a possible, put the item number in a post here requesting the rader to go look at it.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

I put a bid down on that one yesterday. If the red light is not flashing does that mean the alarm is not activated?
