A big THANK YOU to the Brickboard! 200

Short story first:

Walked out to the 92 244 this morning, got to the bottom of the driveway, and noticed the voltmeter hovering at 12v. Not good. I teach, so being late is a problem, as I am (kind of) key to whole project.

Park the Volvo before killing the battery, hop in the '82 VW Westy (an equally stupid automotive action in its own right, but less likely to leave me stranded in the short run)...

Come home at 6, cook, clean, etc. Too tired to fix/replace the alt until Saturday... but what would the BB collective say? They would say take the multimeter and see if you can run down the problem. 15 minutes later, discovered the female connector at the back of the alt had popped out - stick it in, fire it up, voila'! 14.4v charging.

1.5 years ago, when I decided to start fixing stuff myself, I had no idea what to do, and felt VERY uncomfortable even changing the oil. Now I dive into projects I couldn't dream of, and while I may get in over my head, you've given me the confidence to learn my way around the engine bay. With the encouragement and instruction of the many, many generous and knowledgeable users here, I was able to save what would certainly have been a trip to the shop not so long ago, as well as aggravation, and money. For that I thank all of you so very much.

Oh, and BTW, if you don't have one, get a voltmeter!

Again, thank you all for your help and instruction!

Lanval

Sorry for the double-post, but not sorry for saying 'thank you' twice!

Best,

L

BTW - if you're on Samba for the VW's I'm Lanval over there too...

remember to make a donation to BB as that is how it survives to help us all! Pass the word around... BB certainly deserves it...

      Flame Trap,

Yes! I meant to mention it, but as part of my 'thank you' there must be some donation involved. This board has saved me too much money. Won't be much, but if we all do a little bit, it will be more than enough.

      Thanks for reminding me,

      Best,

      Lanval

    Echo.

And I liked the saying someone else posted:
When you start working on your own car, you have two bags. One for experience and one for luck. One is empty. One has some luck in it. Hopefully you fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

Thanks to you guys, I understand cars much better and have saved tons on labor costs. This site is invaluable. Which reminds me that I should contribute.

Like some others who read your post, I feel flattered. Thank you.

I will take this opportunity to send you a "Thank you" for a not only somewhat flattering but also a remarkably easy to read and well written post. These tired eyes greatly appreciate reading posts that are easily understood, grammatically correct, spelled correctly, and have lots of white spaces. Do you, by any chance, teach English?

    Regards,

    Bob

      Bob,

I have been known to opine on the subject of literature from time to time... heh. Yeah, I'm starting my dissertation (slowly. yikes. Somewhere there is a very angry advisor...).

It's funny you mention the grammar, spelling, etc., because I actually specialize in Old/Middle English; which means much of what I read preceded the notion of writing style, punctuation or spelling. So I see people spell and write poorly on the internet (or elsewhere - I had a student submit an essay for a grade in which he used the capital letter "U" for "you" throughout the essay. Ouch.), and then argue that "Hey, it's OK if I don't spell correctly - everyone knows what I mean!"

But of course, that's where English started, with everyone spelling everything any way they wanted to. What really kills me is when the same type who make the claim that spelling is irrelevant complain about reading Chaucer - "all the words are funny!" "Yeah," I'm thinking, "from the guy who thinks spelling is for chumps." The only reason everyone knows what you mean when you spell "lose" l-o-o-s-e is because there is a system in place to begin with; we know it's an error because we KNOW THE RULES. Why some think that's carte blanche to be illiterate is beyond me. Or in the words of Boopsie from "Doonsbury" while making a protest placard "Maybe I should get a dictionary - it'll have more impact if it's spelled right!" Indeed.

Rant aside, you, Sven's Maintainer,Jorrell, Farmboy, Strong-Pimp-Hand,Dave_242, illbird68, George and a bunch of other guys do a real service in helping so many other with your experience and interest in sharing.

      Thanks again,

      Best,

      Lanval

        Lanval -

This is a tangent to Volvo content, but I cannot resist. A young person (8th grade) and I were talking about how to not waste a summer, and I asked his most fun "real" subject in school. Part of his answer was that he hated spelling.

Years ago I learned that spelling is a Social Grace. One's correct spelling, or lack thereof, will cause one to be placed in a certain "pigeonhole" by peers or superiors, usualy without comment. Thus a relatively well-educated individual may not get a promotion because of coming across as being poorly educated and/or not intelligent. Fits into your use of A System rather well, I think. Final word from me: It is encumbent on the initiator of a commumication to ensure its accurate reception by the intended recipient.

        Regards,

        Bob

Same here, Michael. 18 months ago I was nervous doing a tune-up and spent an hour fretting the first time I did so because I thought I may have cross-threaded a spark plug. Now, while there are still MANY things I've never done on a car, I haven't the slightest fear of jumping in and learning as I go.

The Brickboard gives confidence first, knowledge follows.

I used to be afraid of working on a 240. All that electronic gizmostuff...I was much more comfortable on a roundfender.

The brickboard, together with Bentley, have opened a whole world of cars to me. If now I only had room to carry a full locker full of 740 stuff, too....
