door lock tumbler falls out - how can I fix? 120-130

this has been an issue since I bought my 67 P220. The lock cylinder in the passenger side door handle falls out. Well, it come out with little effort. I fear that some jerk will notice some day a swipe it just to be a jerk.

I do not believe that the cylinder is broken - it operates perfectly, but I've no idea how to fix it. I definitely do not want to replace all three locks with an IPD kit just because of some little pin or whatever.

What can I do before I lose this thing?

You'll need to pull the door handle out and dismantle the lock in order to put a pin in it. The pin goes in the push button itself. If the pin is missing it has either rusted away or wasn't put in the last time someone serviced the lock.

My first task when I bought my wagon was to repair all three locks. The previous owner "fixed" the locks by fitting an alarm system. Leaving the car un-locked but alarmed didn't make much sense to me.

The photo shows where the pin goes. It runs in the groove in the lock cylinder. Find a nail or piece of wire thats the right size, trim it to length and tap it in. It doesn't need to be super tight because there is a rubber gasket that sits up at the base of the push button that will hold it in. It can't go anywhere.

The locks aren't too difficult to pull apart. Just lay out all the parts as you remove them and maybe take some photos as you go.

      There's a spring too! 120-130

I think this plays into what you are about to do.

The first time i did this I couldn't figure out
why the cylinder wouldn't release all the way. It
was because of this spring (pictured below) holding it
somewhat in place. I posted this pic a while back when
someone else was dealing with this situation.
      Hope it helps you.

I wish I had seen the other picture when I first
did the fix because I didn't slide down the rubber
piece that was covering the pin and i had a heck of
a time finding where the pin was.....LOL.

I used a thicker piece of a paper clip as the pin and
it has worked fine for 5+ years now.

      Good luck!

      Karl

      RJ;

I agree with ng...I'd just take things apart and figure out what the problem is...that picture doesn't look like what I found when a similar thing was happening to my drivers door lock...it turned out that a screw which holds the lock cylinder from the back side just vibrated out...luckilly, I was able to find it laying in the bottom of the door...a dab of permatec to goop up the threads and back in it went...and has stayed ever since!...the pic ng posted doesn't look like what I remember though...maybe there were production differences???

Here is pic from GCP site...its a little tough to see much detail...

      Good Hunting!
