Help! My hood release cable handle came off in my hand 200 1986

I went to look under the hood a little while ago and when I pulled the white handle, it was a little tighter to pull than usual. I pulled a little harder and the long white handle unit came off in my hand. I can see the end of the cable with the little part that fits into the end of the handle, but there doesn't seem to be a way of getting a grip on it enough to pull on it. I recall a couple of years ago of some posts on how to get to the release mechanism and get the hood opened. Someone, please pass along some good hints.

Thanks.

Help! My hood release cable handle came off in my hand 200 1986

I got it opened finally. I couldn't get to the latch assembly from under the airdam because I had a pusher fan in place. Bummer. So I took my screwdriver and smacked out the two outboard tabs that secure the bottom of the grille then was able to push up and lift out the grille leaving me access to the latch from the front. I'll clean and reassemble everything with the cable and the handle tomorrow.

    Thanks for responding.

So the wire is still connected to the hood latch up front, right?

Here is what I would do.

First use some spray lube, whatever you have around but not WD-40 (that is not a lubricant) and try to spray through the grille up onto the latch mechanism.

Then get a stout set of Vise-Grips. Use them, with a second pair of pliers, to bend a hook into the wire. Grab the hook with the Vise-Grips as tight as you can get them. Make it so that the wire and Vise-Grips are at 90 degrees, so the Vise-Grips are like a handle. Wearing work gloves, pull the wire as hard as you are able.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
