Temp under the hood.... 200 1993

Guys, I need a reality check. My temp gauge has been telling me lies (yes, it was the temp compensator board) and now I am paranoid that my car is running too hot. This is on the '93 245.

With the compensator board now bypassed, the needle is right in the middle where it should be. Previously it was running about halfway between the middle and the red.

After a 15 min drive, the upper radiator hose is too hot to touch for very long. The lower hose is hot, but I can grab it. The oil filler cap is almost too hot to touch.

Does this sound too hot?

Thanks!

Sounds about right. Get one of the IR thermometers if you are worried they are cheap enough.

Agreed - I had the temp compensator removed a while ago... Recently, the oil temp gauge was showing 240-280F, but the coolant temp showed normal - who is correct?

Answer = first, quick check - is the radiator working? Top tube from engine = too hot to handle/hold. Bottom tube is hot, but can be held. Sounds good, but do I really know what's up? No. Buy an IR thermometer, then check.

Top coolant tube = 185F or so
bottom coolant tube = 130 or so? I don't remember exactly, but that's about right.

Answer: the coolant gauge was correct, oil temp reading wrong.

Nice feeling to KNOW, rather than THINK; I got the $80 Sears Craftsman on sale for $60 - it's good to 1000 degrees, so I can use it for cooking, etc.

      Best of luck,

      Lanval
