Problem with #1 cylinder 960 6cyl 900 1992

I have a problem with the # 1 cylinder in the 960. It worked fine then the "check engine" light comes on, still works OK. Then #1 stops firing, check the spark coil, no good, replace coil everything works fine. Two days later the same problem, except this time it melts up the new coil and starts to short out inside. I had to remove the wires to stop the short. I now have a 5 cylinder car, any suggestions??. Thanks,Andrew

    Hello Andrew,
You need to check your spark plug and then the intake manifold gasket. Bad spark plug will cause the coil meltdown, if the wire was grounding you would have no fire. I use the Ngk plugs because of long service life and reliability, stay away from any bosche platinum product, they ----. If you want extra performance and maybe a bit a gas mileage increase, use the irridated plugs. Pauli

Check to see if any of the wires going to the coil are grounded with the key on. They shouldn't be. Wiggle the harness around and see if you can get a ground to show up. A short to ground on the - side of the coil will definitely burn it up.

The power stages control the coils. I've never heard of one causing the problem you have. It almost sounds as if something is grounding out. I hesitate to advise you to swap the two power stages (front to rear) and see if the misfire changes cylinders in case the problem is with the power stage (you don't want to burn out another coil). Perhaps Paulii or Rule308 can advise.
