I've been seeing a lot of these red torpeado gas can appearing on eBay. I bought one, and then some of the others I was watching were updated to say that they only fit the 140 series.
What's the deal? Are there any of these sharp-looking things that fit the 122s?

As a corolary, the tanks made by volvo as a optional additament for 141 models can be see on page 12-1 (page 6) of http://volvo1800pictures.com/document/assessories_73/accessories_1973_group_10.pdf. It is a catalog from 1973 (time after the 121 range was discomisionated).

Sigh...
Again an auction on eBay claiming a 240 gas can being for the PV's/120's etc.
Item no. 110130505899
NOT! for the pre 1975 models - but for the 240's. Remember that pre 1975 wheels all where 15" - where 240's where 14" standard wheels..

Well... a 14" gas can would fit inside a 15" rim...
I was a high bidder when it was under $40.00, but some people went a bit nuts on the bidding and it's nearly $95.00 now. It still has a few days, so I expect it to get ridiculous.

VolvoMyths-Buster in action - I need to update the site with a complete info-page on gas cans.

Hum, Not taking any chances on the price are you?
I think I recognize your listings. Aren't you the guy who listed the 700.00 fender mirrors back in early 2005.
I should warn you. I decided to forgo the problems of being outbid at the last moment and bought a torpedo gas can at full price ($75.00). Short afterwards, several more were listed and NONE sold at anywhere near that price. I know, I got a second one.
That's not to say that the can you're offering is not nice, vintage, or worth the price you set, but don't be surprised if you don't get any bids.

Narh, why let my nice old vintage gas can go for less? You and I are lucky to live in a liberal World :-) If a gas can for the 240 series reach 225 - then I see no problem TRYING to get 249 for the 544/122 one.
Remember, eBay listing fee yesterday was only 0.50 cents - so it is/was very cheap to spread the info on gas cans - if it then sells - hey, you are free to stop by for a free beer!
Yes, I do from time to time list exclusive items and not long ago it's true I sold a set of fender mirrors at arround 620 - it's very easy to check out my sellings - just check my feedback.
NOS parts for classic Volvo's have a holde different value than say for Chevrolet's - there are no industri reproducing parts in same big business, so rare NOS parts have a completely different price-mechanism.
NOS 122 fender mirrors are not expensive at $6-700 - but 240 gas cans at $225 are a bit over the top.
I never mind not getting bids - I enjoy making relations.
Oh, and do not forget, do you have a set of NOS 123 GT mirrors, in original box, my instant offer will be $800 - hit me!

How come you no longer post as "classic volvo shop" and instead as "someone claiming to be ME"?
Yeah we live in a free market economy, and yeah the internet gives us diehard volvo fans more access to parts than we had, say even 10 years ago. And now you have a much larger market for stuff you've scavenged on the other side of the pond.
I've been looking for one of the "in the tire" gas cans for a long time. They seldom come up for sale. I should've bought one for $35 when I saw it. Alas.
I don't consider what you are doing as particularly honorable - buy it now for $250. Give me a break! But hey, now that the Boomers with money can afford early Gibson mandolins for $225,000 and come late to play at the Volvo table and can pay more than any of the folks already here can afford, you should do very well. The rest of us will continue to hoard and trade or sell reasonably amongst ourselves.
I hope nobody buys your gas can.

I'm very sorry that I didn't manage to make it clear: I hope my gas can DOES NOT get sold too! :-)
Let me repeat: I listed the auction at a "0.50 cents listing fee day" - so regardless of the starting bid, it only costed me 0.50 cents - or, free more or less. I wanted to give the info on gas cans - but as always - if you stick out your nose, someone will also punch you. Sadly.
I do not wish to log in here on this site, my email adr. was spammed via this site.
Again, I incourage you to visit the hopefully nice pictures the eBay listing gives acces too, you are welcome.
Don be angry/sad/unhappy - the hour you spent getting annoyied over all this, at least 5,000 people died from not having medicine, food, clean water.

Well, they've instituted some e-mail protection, but frankly, I used a spamed e-mail address for all my internet logins and save my personal private address for important things. If your address is already spamed then there's no *more* harm in logging on with it.
While I like to think I'm more tactful, Danny makes a good point. Those of us here do not have cash falling out of our pockets and most of us would never pay anyone $800.00 for a pair of car mirrors or $250.00 for a scratched up old gas can - no mater where it is from or how old it is. Sue we have old cars, but we also have mortgages, low-paying jobs, and families to support. We're a generally thrifty bunch who appreciates the quality of a volvo car and almost nobody in here came to a classic volvo in later life and has thousands of dollars to spend on one. I personally have a chance to buy one or two big-dollar items every year, but at nothing like the prices you ask for your stuff. My 1800E cost less than a third of the price of your mirrors, my 122S cost 3x the price of your gas can.
Just because we are in the USA doesn't mean we are all rich. Unless you've just come to the Brickboard you should realize that. Our cars are daily drivers and rolling restorations, very few are garaged and trailered to car shows. Regardless, all of use appreciate the quality and longevity of these cars.
Sure it's a capitalist society, but we share knowledge, parts, and labor with one another usually for free and never in attempt to extract massive profits from each other.
If you think the time it takes us to consider the price inflation of parts and be frustrated would be better spent worrying about people without food or shelter, consider how many people you could have fed or kept warm for the asking price of a pair of your mirrors?

Yes, this is the long, flat-top, rounded body model. The seller insisted that it fit in his 122 (sedan). I was dubious, but the first one arrived today (yes, I bought two by accident) and after releasing my spare tire hold-down and moving the jackstand, it drops right next to the spare and the lid closes. This makes me happy - although I'm disapointed that I paid well above the latest going rate for this one. I got the second one for about $40.00 less...

The Swedish word for these is "Reserverdunk" That third e might be an a.
Not 100% sure but I think there was one for the tire well of a 122. Most of the ones I've seen are for 140s and are a similar but different shape. (i.e. won't fit in a 122) There is also a round "flying saucer" one that fits inside the spare wheel.
All of them are somewhat prone to leakage where the filler neck joins the body, so check yours before you fill it and stow it in the trunk. A better idea is to carry it empty, so if you run out of gas, you will have something to get it in, and the risks of keeping gasoline in the trunk are eliminated.

Are these the ones which are part of a circle with the cap at one end, which converts into a filler, and a handle in the middle of the top (the top is flat). If so, they were designed to go in the other spare wheel well in the trunk of a 140. I have one I purchased in 1971 and it is still going strong.

It goes in the passenger side well
on 140& 240 as far as I know.
Except on the wagons the lift gate
wash bottle must be moved.

There might be one there right now that does. It's a full circle though and looks like it would fit in the spare tire well. I bought one too and it definitely doesn't fit. Of course, if you find one to fit, where do you put your spare tire? My spare doesn't fit the regular spot so it sits on the floor of the trunk and takes up a fair amount of space. I need to find me a skinny 15" wheel tire combo...

I supose this type of gas can is used on cars with _two_ spare tire wells (when a gas reserve is more valued than having two spare tires on the trunk).

Oops on previous post. Hit enter instead of tab.
I've seen these on Ebay too. They are definitely for the 140 series which has the same recess down each side of the boot. You can either take two spare wheels or one spare and one fuel can. The full circle fuel can I'm not sure about but I suspect it is designed for 140 series also. It would probably go OK in an Amazon wagon either lying flat in the spare wheel well or standing up on the left side and hooked up where the second spare is supposed to go. I'd go for standing it up so it could be admired.

Well, through some overzealous bidding, I managed to get two of these. Whoops.
The seller of the first informed me that he had a 122S and it fit fine. I image that he has a sedan, so no idea about wagon fitment. I'm hoping it will fit in the spare chamber with the spare, or maybe inside the quarterpanel cavity. Maybe I'd be so lucky as to find a way to fit it to the under-body somehow...
I'll let you know when I get them...

What search term on ebay best hits this item?

Generally "Volvo Gas Can." Usually coupled with rare, vintage, oem, etc.
Right now you'd just find a circular one that is for the 1800 model and you'd be bidding against me for that one.
Take a look at eBay item #260120130078 for keywords/description/photos.
I might be interested in selling it -as I do not need two...
