'92 240 sedan no horn/wipers 200 1992

Just bought a volvo sedan yesterday(it's been 20 yrs since I owned one) It has passed Md inspection, but when I got it home once the wipers were turned on they wouldn't stop, the horn doesn't work and when you try to work the wiper control the seat belt light goes on and off. Also the headlights won't go on, only the fog lamps. I love volvo and had good experiences with them in the past, but yesterday i felt a little like Barney Fife when he bought his car. I think it is a grounding issue, and is eay to remedy.Thank you for your help and advice!!!!

Wow, this one is interesting.

I recall that when I pulled the center console cover off to replace my radio in the '91 last winter, that there was a ground screw with several ground wires connected to it screwed to the metal structure behind the center console on the passenger side. I had to remove it, and when I put it together, one of the ground wires had fallen back into the maze of wires and I failed to put that wire back, causing some weird electrical problems.

I vaguely recall that there were about 4 ground wires, and they were all brown(?).

That is where I would start.

PS, the light bulb behind the heater controls can get tugged out of place when you pull out that cover. Mine has been shining at me through a crack since I did that work, waiting for me to pull the cover off AGAIN to correct it.

Another ground. This is the ground for horn switch and for high/low beam switching. Maybe also for turn signals and wipers?

Left side of steering column, just down from the turn signal stalk. Remove the upper and lower shell covers for access. On ours the screw loosened + dropped out.

On a '92 you have to disable the airbag first. See this link.

Bottom line: Disconnect battery but wait an unspecified # of seconds for the backup capacitor to lose charge before you trust the system is disabled.
