Buying 88 240

I have an opportunity to purchase a 88 240 sedan with 133000 km for about
$700.00 Canadian. The car is in remarkable condition and I know it is a steal of a deal. I would like to hit the road running but the signal lights don't work. Looking for troubleshooting suggestions so that I can get it on the road ASAP. Planning to pick up the car this week.

Turn signals use the same flasher relay as the emergency flasher system.

Try the flashers and check all the lights. If they are all good and flashing, distrust the turn signal stalk on the steering column.

Junkyard part, just get several to be sure you get one good one. If you have cruise control, you will need the proper stalk. If not, a CC stalk will work anyway. Mabe you'll find a donor car with cruise. I installed a Volvo system on my 1988 (had the Volvo instructions) and I like it a lot.

If the flasher test fails, it's likely the relay. Get a new one. It is an easy fix. Relay is mounted clipped to the vertical support rail on the left corner of the center control panel. Remove the left side kick panel and feel around carefully. The clip has sharp edges.

Small potatoes if the car is really good. Did you pull up the door sills and check for rust there?

Buy now, fix later. The 1988 is a good one. LH2.2 engine management has a pretty good ECU, no more crumbling wiring harness, solid engine, high level flame trap. Mine is about ready for its 200K miles badge.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
