parts car id 700

picked up a parts car this week to swap the front end as I have hit two groups of deer this winter, but I can't get the vin to compute as to what it is - someone messed with it severely as it has a b230ft non original and the ecu is missing. The seat belts were made in 86 but it has the error code thingy under the hood for LH 2.4. It has no a/c or sunroof, manual rear windows/ power front heated seats and a 5 speed. the VIN is YV1744883k2****** any clues ?

Assuming it's some kind of 700 series, and you've perhaps gotten numbers instead of letters when you transcribed the VIN, the K in the 10th digit means it's a 1989, and the 2 after that indicates a "Volvo Europe" factory, i.e. a car built in Belgium. Many 740s came from the Belgium factory, so that correlates.

Maybe it's YV1FA- ? Though I didn't think it would be FA until 1990 when airbags were standard... anyway doesn't matter.

If it is indeed a Turbo engine, you've probably got a LH 2.2 car on your hands, but with the check engine diagnostic package I'm not totally sure.

See if it's got a crank sensor on the top of the trans, or a wiring harness plug to the bottom of the distributor. A 1989 NA engine should be LH2.4 and have a crank sensor. A 1989 Turbo should have a connection on the dist for a hall sensor, making it LH 2.2.

What wonders we find in the junkyards...

I checked the #'s and they are correct, the car was assembled in belgium and had e-codes on it so I think that the euro vins must be different

It didn't seem to post into the message but I looked at it on imageshack. Looks like a regular 740GLE, which was our standard non-turbo model.

I want those lights though! We never got that package, and it just looks so much better that the US sealed-beam lamp setup.

I had not considered that European VIN's would be that different from USA models. Our 740s are all identified as "YV1FX" or "YV1FA". The 760s are YV1GX or GA and the 940 models are typically YV1JS for sedans and YV1JW for wagons.

I have never seen one with numbers in digit 4 and 5, and I've typed in a LOT of VIN's over the years.

Hope you can get some useful parts from that car. And send me the lights!! Just kidding, just kidding... sort of.

Either you're reading the VIN wrong, or the paperwork you have is wrong.

    YV1 - tells us it's a Volvo

The next place should be F=740 or G=760 - 7 is not a valid character

The next place should be A=airbag or X=mechanical seatbelts

next you have "44" - that's an engine code for a B21E. I'm pretty sure no 700 ever came with that engine.

next place is number of doors. No 8-door 700s were made :)

next place is meaningless for ID purposes

    etc, etc.

Recheck the VIN on 3 places on the car. Dash top, engine bay, RF door jamb.
