Clutch cable broke...can I drive it? 200 1985

Hi All,
URGENT. My clutch cable broke at the pedal about 1 mile from home. Is there any way I can get it in gear safely/harmlessly and drive it home? The cable's only 4 mos old from IPD!
Much appreciated.

if you're only a mile from home, start in first gear - in other words put the car in first, then crank it up - it will lurch forward and start - then drive slowly home without shifting.
if you have to stop along the way, put on the brakes and don't be alarmed as the car lurches to a stop.
if the car is in another gear now and you have trouble going to neutral, you can try rocking the car (get out and push it a little, let it rebound, push again) then try the gears shift again.

Did anyone see the movie Little Miss Sunshine?

They should have been doing this, but instead they screwed around pushing the bus until they could get it into 3rd. Not really well thought out technically, but it did make for a pretty funny movie.

A car is certainly drivable without a clutch. The other day my friend's clutch cable broke at the top of a steep hill near my house. This was in his 82 245T that I used to own. We started it in gear, got it moving, popped it into neutral and coasted to a parking spot by my driveway. A quick trip to FCP and a minor repair to the firewall got the car back on the road about an hour later.

Sure, why not?? How much of your driving time is spent using the clutch?
To go forward, WHEN YOU ARE READY to got, put it in first, start the engine
and drive away. If you have to back out first, start it in reverse.
Snatch it into neutral before stopping and shutting the engine off.
Minimize the necessity for stops and carefully synchronize speeds to shift.
A little practice before this happens to you is worth its weight in gold.

Those of us who suffered with the fragile gearboxes on British sports cars learned this long ago!

My clutch cable broke in the garage one time and I couldn't get the thing in gear til I had a new cable. Unless maybe someone got under the car and pushed the fork arm while you put it in gear.
