Hello,

Those things are called gravel guards.

The ones pictured in the Classic Motor Sports site are of the original stainless steel versions offered in the Volvo Accessories catalog.

The original ones on 1800 and 544/444 Volvos are rubber parts and came mounted from the factory and were not optional.
