Battery 140-160

Awhile back I posted about what battery size to get for a 68 144S. Was off today and was out and about. I stopped at a number of places. I measured the old battery which wasn't right by the look of it. It didn't have the ears on the ends for the hold downs. It looked right for length. I didn't see many that had the end ears and the posts an the postive post at the right end. NAPA looked it up and showed me what they had listed. Two different priced batteries. Both different sizes?? Both didn't have the ears on the end. The length that seems to look right is about 10 inches. I guess I will keep looking and measuring.

The correct battery is called a DIN66, but that is the European number for it. New Volvos also use the same DIN66 with the ears at the bottom (at least my S40 does). But you do not need nearly that much power to start a 144 at moderate temperatures. The reason for the large battery is because in Sweden you have extreme cold and smaller batteries do not last long. Also in the old days you did not have the modern convenience of mains power points in public parking lots so you could not run battery heaters. You needed a strong battery in those cold climates.

I've always used #24 batteries in various life ratings and brands.
Seemed to be more than adequate.

Me too. I've used both 24 and 24F. The difference is in how the posts are arranged.

However not all brands had the embossed case.
I know Eveready and the latest Die Hard I bought did not.

I haven't purchased an Interstate because the price is usually up to 50% higher or so around here.

I'll say it again...

As of 2005, the *only* battery I could find with the proper end-type hold-down is made by Interstate.

You can look and look, or go straight to Interstate.
