Motor mounts 700 1991

Time to change motor mounts as at least one has given up the ghost. I'm leaning toward making the lift apparatus shown in the FAQ. The pics don't show the position of the lift hook, but it is mentioned that it's toward the front of the engine. My '91 na has a lift eyelet, but it's attached to an exhaust stud off the number 3 cylinder. My question: Is this eyelet meant to be used to lift the engine? I'm not sure the exhaust stud should be used in this fashion. I don't really want to replace it right now. Where is the lift hook supposed to be located on a B230F?

These old motor mounts are about to shake my teeth out!

Thanks in advance.
Jim

What ever you do, do not use the jack from the bottom method. It is too dangerous.

I made one, rather, just cut the wood. I notched the two 2 x 8 legs down to about 1 inch to fit in the fender correctly and even put notches to clear the screw heads in the fender for both locations.

There are two lifting eyes. You found the exhaust side lifting eye for the RH motor mount. The LH one should be on top of the thermostat housing, sharing the same screws as the T-stat housing. If you don’t have it, I guarantee someone forgot to put it back when changing the T-stat which would be easy to do. Salvage yard visit may be necessary.

BYW, they do look kind of skimpy but this is what is normally used to pull the engine or the engine and tranny as a unit. For the motor mounts, all you are doing is lifting the engine no more than an inch, one side at a time.

    Hi Jim,

I just pulled the engine on my 88 765 so that certainly makes the job of changing the mounts a bit easier.

Use the lifting eyes on the front of the intake and the rear of the exhaust and lift the engine off of the mounts or put a board under the oil pan to spread the load and jack it up. If your distributor is in the back of the head you need to be careful of breaking the cap on the firewall.

    Regards,

Thanks for the warning, Will. I usually manage to inflict some kind of collateral damage when performing repairs on my brick. Now I know to be mindful of the cap.

      Jim
