front disk conversion 120-130

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying a 1963 220. It's very straight, has a rebuilt b20e with a Weber, and a good m41 transmission, but it needs a paint job and the brakes lose pressure. I have a 1965 220 parts car with a great brake system and of course front disks. I'm considering swapping the brake system out of the parts car. Do I need to replace both the front suspension/steering/braking/crossmember assembly and the rear axle because the bolt patterns don't match up (seem to remember that being an issue from a previous thread)? Will everything bolt up? Will any fabrication be required? Any comments or suggestions?

thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin,
You will have a little bit to deal with on the short lines twixt caliper and soft line.
If I recall correctly, you can use the short, hard line from the early car, but they will need to be bent into a new shape to feed into the caliper.

I have my '64 wagon converted to disc front and changed the rear axle from early Wagner/Salisbury to later Girling/Dana...no booster, no proportioning valve, no problems.

Best,
Shayne.

Colin,
Everything should bolt up as 122, etc said.
You may find upon removing your old hardware rust, cross member damage, etc and a need for new bushings, so be prepared for that.

An aftermarket, adjustable rear proprotioning valve is a common upgrade, changing the braking capacity of the car to suit your suspension and braking setup. Available at most racing shops.

No the stud pattern is the same, just bolt on the hubs, the calipers and caliper brackets. (stub axle/bearings are identical) If it has the wagner brakes they'll work at the rear without a servo, however the Wagner rears with a servo are lethal so you also need to change the rear brakes. again straight bolt on. You'll also need to fit the limiting valve for the rears.

hi,

Thank you all for the info. My parts car never had a brake servo, at least as long as i've owned it. it's obvious from the holes in the fender that it once did though. not having a servo has never been a problem for me, but then again i've got some pretty strong legs to stomp the pedal with. so does that mean that i can simply use the rear brakes off the '65? straight bolt up?

I fully planned on replacing any broken or worn out bushings and probably the limiting straps too. thanks for the heads up.

Colin

Yup all the major stuff swaps straight over. As Shane said you'll need the appropriate brake pipes and hoses. But its a bolt for bolt swap.
