Stereo install 200 1992

I replaced the stereo in the upper dash section of my 92 240. I got the stereo, wiring harness, and dash kit from Crutchfields. All went well with the installation, except that there were no wires (lavender) present for the rear speakers... ?

Also, I get no sound from the front speakers. Not even a hiss when the volume is maxed. The stereo powers up, the tuner shows an output signal.

The fuses are new and seem fine, uncorroded. Is there an inline fuse somewhere? Also, where are the wires for the rear speakers?

Any help appreciated.

Was there a working stereo in the car before? I just replaced an aftermarket stereo in my daughter's 240 and i just used the harness on the car, the Bentley manual and a diagram I made of how to match the two together. If somebody had already been in there and did one of those "free installations" then you have a tough road ahead, because they cut / splice wires to save time, it took me a whole day to sort out the mess.

Got it! Thanks all for the help.

What I did in the end was take off enough of the dash to access the amp which is located just below the ashtray basically. I disconnected the wiring harness from the amp and connected those wires to my new stereo - this harness also includes front speaker wires, which of course now work.

Crutchfield gave me everything I needed, I am happy with my purchase from them.

Hope the Crutchfield kit will help. I didn't use it, and ended up totally rewiring the front a rear speakers myself.

Farm Boy right, its the amp. They were junk by the way..I got a few in the scrap pile. Crutchfields has run into this problem before. Tell them you got the amp and you want to bypass it. The right harness has all the right extra wires.. AS Farm Boy said.. Nuff Said..Max

If it is like my '91, there is an amplifier down on the transmission hump. Right behind the lower storage pocket that is below the heater controls. The original radio sends right/left signal and right/left front/rear gain controls to the amp.

You need to bypass the amp and feed the speakers straight from the new radio. I got an adapter kit from the radio install shop at Best Buy. The kit had a plug for the top and a plug for the bottom that fit the original Volvo wiring harness plugs. I just matched up the wires and soldered and shrink tubed them, and it was a plug-and-play installation. Sounds great, by the way, even with original speakers. I should have done it years ago.

Sounds like Crutchfield didn't send you all the hardware you need for a '92.

The top plug on the adapter kit has a couple of extra wires for the rear speakers so it works with non-amp Volvo radios that feed all four speakers from the radio. I just clipped them off on my installation because my Volvo wiring harness plug did not have any contacts in those holes in the top plug.

I know that I made notes on the wiring colors and pinouts. I can try to find them for you if you want to bypass the amp with a soldering gun rather than an adapter kit. The tricky part is that Volvo did not color-code the wires between the amp and the speaker, so you have to figure out which wires are which and mark them if you want to do this without an adapter kit. My notes would be helpful.

I have everything I need from Crutchfield. Like I said, the rear speaker wires aren't apparent in the upper dash. I have wires from the radio to connect them, not from the car. Where are they?

Also, as I mentioned, I am getting no signal from the front speakers which are hooked up. Even when the volume is cranked, there is no hiss. What is preventing me from getting a signal from the new stereo, which has been correctly installed minus the rear speakers?

The rear wires are in the center console by the heater controls. You will find a amp there with a plug, it is a pain in the ass to get to. As far as the speakers for the front I would check the wire harness you have from crutchfield. I had to pull some of the connectors out of mine and switch them around because I had no power. They may have switched wires around on you. 92-93 200 series had 2 different stock radios in them. I hope this helps.
