gas smell when sitting at idle 900 1993

When my 1993 960 sits and idles for a few minutes I get a strong gasoline smell on the drivers side of the car. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks for the help!

Two common sources of gas fumes in these cars are the fuel rail and the rubber hose connecting the fuel filler neck to the gas tank. If it's the hose to the tank, you'll see a puddle of fuel directly under the center of the rear axle when you top the tank.

If it's the fuel rail, you can see the gasoline leaking from the end cap. This could be tricky to diagnose, as it will typically leak only when first starting the engine. As the engine warms up, heat expansion of the parts can seal the leak. So you should look for it with a cold engine on startup. The fix is to replace the fuel rail, although some on this board have reported acceptable results with a repair of just the end cap. Because of the potential consequences of having fuel vapors in a hot engine compartment, I would strongly consider replacing the entire fuel rail. The replacement part has a modified design to correct the original design flaw.

Does your fuel smell occur only on startup when it idles for a few minutes, or does it occur at idle even after the engine is at operating temperature?

      Thanks for the quick reply.
I have not noticed the fuel smell at start up, I will check for it in the morning.
I have only noticed it after it runs and I idle for a few minutes. Like today, I was out doing errands then I stopped in front of my mailbox with the car running and there was a strong gas smell.

My wife's 740 is doing that. I've checked evrything I can think of. There is no gas leaking anywhere. It still runs good and gives about 27 MPG highway, so there can't be too much wrong with the mixture. I'm leaning toward a bad catalytic converter. It is an aftermarket unit that is about 2-1/2 years old, so I will pull it off as soon as I get a chance and see what's up.

Maybe if I'd get off the BB, I'd have time to go fix the car.

Believe it or not, a gas smell in my 240 was caused by the neck of the filler tube being out of round. Mechanic put some channel locks on the lip, pulled it back into round, no more gas smell.

Apparently the gas cap seal wasn't completing because the lip was too far out of round. I was smelling gas when driving. I couldn't believe that fumes from this were the problem, but I never had the problem again.
