My experience is mostly '86 and later but nobody else answered yet.
Is your car fuel injected, and not turbo? I'm pretty sure all US cars were FI but I know carbureted 240s were made.
How is your tune up? If it's been a long while then new cap + rotor + plugs are in order.
Check white blade fuse holder rearward from battery. Dirt and corrosion will often disable it; fuse rarely blows. It powers the ignition + fuel system, at least on the mid-later cars up til about '91 or so. The leads to fuse holder are hot so IF you want to work on the fuse holder itself, disconnect battery ground cable before getting into it.
If in-tank pump is dead or if pump's hose within tank is perforated then starting will be hard when tank is less than full. So see if your easy vs. hard starting changes when you fill or empty the tank. If in-tank hose is OK and in-tank pump is bad, starting will be tough after the main pump loses its prime after some sitting time. If inner hose is perforated then starting will be tough any time fuel level is below where the hose holes are - imagine sucking soda thru a straw with holes. If doing any work inside tank, plan on replacing the whole shebang - in tank pump, fuel gauge level sender, filter, and hose.
Main fuel pump failure often begins as intermittent failure. You can often help start it by tapping with small hammer or whatever. If that succeeds, take it as a sign that the pump is on its way out. But crawl under and see exactly where you're hitting. There are fuel lines and wires in the area so be careful, and don't hit too hard either. Main pump is located under left rear seating area.
Fuel pump relay - I believe on the earlier cars it's on driver's front kick panel. See www.fcpgroton for picture of relay for your car. Solder joints in relay often fail. See the FAQ for 700/900 cars on resoldering relays. Or of course you can replace it.
