Mystery resolved - check engine light with blinking upshift light 200 1990

1990 244 DL

I'd gone back throught the archives looking for the latest of Junior's problems - after the exhaust was repaired, the check engine light was on, and I thought it only the faulty O2 sensor code stored from when there was a hole in the header pipe. Mechanic and I didn't know about the OBD, so he unplugged the battery and then plugged it back in, which turned off the check engine light, only to have it come back on, with the upshift light blinking along side it.

A couple of other people had posted a similar problem, with no real solution offered. The only thing I got out of it was to check port 1 of the OBD, as it was a transmission problem.

Well, I got out the handy-dandy Bentley, and after puzzling through the index looking for error codes, figured out that I was looking for the phrases "fault code" or "self-diagnostic program".

I found the section for checking the check engine codes for L-H fuel systems (section 241-5), and, after my farmer friend told me that I actually do have an OBD on Junior (Paul didn't have one), I got a quick hands-on lesson with Mary's OBD.

I drove back to my mechanic's to try Junior's system out. After discovering I need to find a cover for my OBD unit, I followed instructions for the check engine light, which used port 2. My Bentley was on my arm, open to the appropriate page.

Code came up 121, air mass meter signal fault. No other faults registered. After I cleared the codes, I checked the air mass meter, and either I had forgotten to connect it or it had come undone... once the connection was made, I turned on the engine, and no check engine light or blinking upshift light came on.

I immediately commenced with celebratory WOOHOO! and small circular victory dance! (Small only because it was muddy, and I wanted Junior's first mudbath to be one he drove through, not because I splashed it on him. ;-) I love free fixes!

Lesson for the day - the blinking upshift light does not necessarily mean a transmission fault.

I hope this helps someone else!

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can get Junior on the road!

New mystery now 200 1990

The upshift light (orange/yellow arrow, right?) has no connection to AMM or anything related to the Check Engine light. And there are no OBD I transmission codes. Just socket 2 for FI , socket 6 for ignition, and some socket 2 component tests (see "Control Functions" 2 and 3" in Bentley 241-7&8).

As you now realize, "age matters" on these cars. And in trying to provide helpful replies to your questions, I would be grateful if you dropped the Peter, Paul, Mary, Junior, etc., as I find it very frustrating having to root back thru text in order correlate cute names to real ages in car years.

Wholeheartedly agree with the practicality of what you say!! Listen to Lucid.

Lots of us who have real knowledge and experience with these cars know them by year, engine, FI system but I find the eyes glaze over reading through multiple threads like they were chapters in a daytime TV serial. I just wind up skipping them and leaving them for those who are looking for entertainment.

More effective is one continuous thread from onset to conclusion with all questions answered by the problem owner.

-K (hope springs eternal)

Understood about names. Junior will be Junior, but I will post years as well. n.m.i. 200 1990
