Bushing replacement witrh press. 200 1989

I am going to remove my control arm for bushing replacement. I will probably bring the unit to my local garage to have them press out the old and in the new.

If I had a press, how do they work?

What is the step by step procedure for pressing the old one out and the new one in? I have two friends with the same car, and I know their front ends clunk a lot. Maybe we should go in on the 20 ton press and do the job ourselves.

The front bushing is rarely a problem and the rear usually is shot. I just replaced rear control arm bushings with Poly on 2 of my 240s. You don't replace the shell, just remove the old rubber and the new bushings push right in. The Poly bushing does not require the suspension to be torqued at ride height making them much easier to replace. Dan

The problem I have is that a shop just did the control arm bushings. But the front Pass. side has totally failed. I think the botched the install, not tightening after the let the car down.

I tried it with a torch, hammer, bigger hammer, bigger hammer, BIGGER hammer.

(go to the garage)

They charged me .5 hours labor and saved me a lot of grief.

I do not know how much swearing it took, but the only tools this guy used was a hammer and a bench vice.

That looks easy.

It's not quite that easy. First it depends on the press. If you buy one of those stand up ones with the 20 ton Bottle jack for the pressing it is large to keep in the garage for the amount of use it will get.
Then, for the Firewall Bushing, the way the Bushing is situated in the Mount, you will need to make a sleeve setup that is narrow enough to get past the bulge in the mount but then gets large so you can it on the 'meat' of the bushing. Picture a 1/2" drive extention on a 2" socket.
On the 'easy' side of the control arm, You are going to need a pipe that is very close to the diamter of the outter shell of the Bushing to press it out and a Larger pipe under the Control Arm so the old bushing has room to press out to.

So just keep in mind that Springing for the Press is just part of the equation.

Seems like bringing it to a shop makes the most sense.

The shop is a good call. A stick of TNT might work, too.
