brake light switch 700

Hey guys got a problem with my brake lights. My brake lights only arnt working and the cruse isnt working eathier. Im gessing that its the switch on the brake petal with the vac hose on it. a friend gave me a big red relay out of a another wagon. All the fuses are ok and everything looks good in the wiring in the back. How do I test the switch on the pedal, and anywhere else to check/

thanks Vince 92 740 wagon 8v 179k

hopefully it will pass your test 700

since it appears to be a b**ch to change. See my post from a few days ago.

I posted a pic and someone else advised on how to get the switch out and in.

Armstrong's test is the easiest for your '92. No such shift interlock in '86 and the car where I had this problem had a manual tranny anyway. The hard test is to remove the wires from the switch and jump them with a piece of wire. If your lights come on, then I think you can conclude your switch is bad.

I'm not sure your cruise issue relates. I would have thought that all the controls for cruise on your car were electronic; Mitchell shows that when the brake pedal is pushed, +12V feeds the brake lights and the cruise ECU (this +12V to the cruise ECU cancels cruise control).

+12V from the brake light switch is also required to release the shift lock, so you can use that for a test as to whether or not the brake switch is working. (The test below assumes that the rest of your shift lock functionality is working fine - see this post).

    - turn the key to the position II (Owner's manual is wrong; it says position I)
    - try to take the transmission out of Park - it shouldn't
    - now press and hold the brake pedal down
    - now try to take the transmission out of Park - it should come out now

If the above test works, your brake switch is fine. If it doesn't, it could mean there are other issues with your shift lock release, otherwise it confirms your brake switch is likely the issue.
