rear floor mat and rear heat vents 120-130

I have a 65, 120 wagon and I have an interior design question.

In the interior, there is an elongated black plastic funnel piece that covers the top of the tranny tunnel from under the dash to just pas the front seats. It has an intake at one end that takes air from the inside fan and two outlets at the far end that expels air to the back seat floor. In other words, it is the way to direct warm air to the feet of the back seat occupants.

I put in a new (used) rear rubber floor mat (there was no mat when I got the car) and it fits and looks perfect. However, it covers up the rear vents on the funnel piece - which means that the warm air going to the rear is now directed under the rear mat. If I tuck the rear mat under the funnel piece to expose the vents, it doesn't look quite proper.

Did I miss something? Cut holes for the vents? (I hope not).

Thanks. Waggin.

rear floor mat and rear heat vents - Thanks. 120-130

Thanks all. Tucked the rear mat under the vents - it is pretty well hidden by the seats.

I note that the front and rear mat sizes are pretty exact - when both are installed the front and rear join up perfectly. I would have expected some overlap/slop - example of Volvo quality/precision.

In my '68, the rear mat is under the ductwork and the front mat is over it. IIRC the front mat ends right at the end of the heat duct and therefore does not block the air flow. That's how I remember it, haven't looked under there for a while though.

The duct is supposed to stick out over the mat. Normally the seats are far
enough back that the duct is not obvious unless you are looking for it.

Yes, it's the heater duct. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be like, as my mat was so far gone, it had to be tossed.

I suspect one of two cases. Either you have the mat for an earlier style where passenger foot comfort was ignored, (hence not holes) or maybe the duct is supposed to go over top of the mat? The later seems unlikley, but I've always had a period console over my drive tunnel so I've never really noticed.

Let us know if you figure it out. The duct is definitely not supposed to be heating the air between the body and rubber mat...
