Wierd dim warning lights - fuse ? 200 1993

Hello: On my last three start ups the SRS light has stayed on. There's never been an accident, but the car is 13 ys old with 180K so maybe it's Volvo's way of telling me to have it checked ? Here's what's wierd.... several lights stay on but very dim, just barely showing and they seem to get just slightly brighter when I accelerate ! I'm thinking a fuse is shorting out?? incidental to the SRS warning ??? Anybody experienced this ? Thanks

Definately weak alternator, car is probably running off just the battery. Replace brush assy. ASAP.

When was the Aternator brush/regulator unit replaced? They usually last 100K miles.

Easy job, can be done with the alternator in the car. Easier if the oil filter is out, like during an oil change. I usually remove the heat shield from the exhaust manifold, too.

Disconnect the battery negative cable first.

The brush/reg unit is the black thing on the rear of the alternator. The two machine screws that hold it in place face the rear, and are either Philips head or Torx. Power screwdriver helps, it is an odd angle to get at.

If you decide to pull the alternator, have three new accessory mount bushings on hand. It's a good time to do them, too. Two in the alternator mount ears, one inside the adjusting link where it bolts to the block.

Everything goes back togdther without forcing. If the brushes balk, try another angle. They must ride on the slip rings. Which reminds me, while the brushed are out, use a mirror and flashlight to see inside the alternotor to check the condition of the slip rings. Small pits can be dressed out.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

thanks everyone!.. The ground wire looked ok, but the placement of the alt. makes this one tough for a guy with miserable back problems !! brought the car to my local indie shop and yes, they quickly dx'd a bad Voltage regulator. I asked about the brushes and was told it was part of the parts package that Volvo now sells..
The whole thing cost $69.00 parts (Bosch) and 1/2 hour labor. All in all, not to bad.

      Thanks everyone.

Dont't know about 93s with airbags and ABS, but the charging loop runs thru the AMP Bulb in the instrument panel.
Check: there is a ground wire off the back of the Alternator to the block attaches at the motor mount.
Check: are your brushes are shot, pull the regulator/brush holder on the alt.

Why oh why don't they make 240s anymore :(

IIRC - (and I may be wrong here) but I think it will do that if the wiring is disconnected somewhere between the alternator and you ignition (red - charging) light. It may even do it if the bulb blows.

Do the lights go out if you run the engine up to 1500 rpm ?

The problem is indeed worn-out brushed on the alternator voltage regulator. The lights are a sure indicator that this is the problem. The SRS light comes on because the diagnostic detects a low-voltage condition. When this was a problem on my car, the SRS lamp would go out after a minute or so, but the other lights would stay on (dim).
