There have been some recent postings about buying tires on this forum.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what tire I'm going to buy, this is going to be the 5th set for this car (I'll probably stick with Michelins).
Previously, I had posted that when I buy my next set I'm going to check the prodution date, as lately Discount Tire was giving me crap saying my tires were too old to fix a leak caused by a nail.
It appears that tire sellers are going to a de facto policy of denying repair/forcing replacement of tires that are over 5 years old, BUT they are using the production date on the tire, not the purchase date. (My current tires were made 14 months before I bought them, I had only owned them 3 yrs 10 months).
I was at Sam's Club today and wandered over to the tire area. Not to many choices in my size, but one set of four looked odd. I looked at the production date on the tires (Michelin X's) and they were made in January 2003! I looked at a few more and found some from 2004 & 2005 on others that would fit my car.
I did check some of the SUV tires and find some that were made just 2 months ago...

Tire Rack. Just received my set today. Bridgestone Potenza G900's for my 1800es.
You can read real reviews by people that buy them and ride on them.
Pretty good prices too.

Personally, I've not been all that impressed with Michelins. They last forever, but the traction stinks. I suppose they'd be good if you live in south texas or similar climate.
I always buy Nokians . I have to mail order them out of Colorado , but I have a local guy with some race cars who has a tire shop and he does a super job on mounting and balancing with stick on weights, for a reasonable price...and he has no bones about repairing old tires, so long as there is no real problem with the tire.
I don't have much good to say about Sam's for tires. Just about everyone around here looses a hubcap after leaving there , and I had one lady come to me a few months ago with her 740 wagon after a new set from Sams with not only all her lug nuts over-torqued to between 95-140 ft lbs, but placed on backwards as well ( how hard is it to figure out that the conical side goes toward the wheel?????).

The only good michellin tire is the Hydro Edge. The X is the old tire that michellin doesnt make anymore but places like costco will still sell them.
I recommend some Good year assurance triple treads (super awesome tire)
I've got a cheaper good year (integrity) but they don't feel nowhere near as nice as the triple treads - it's worth the extra 150$.
or maybe some yoko avid sports with the funky tread design

I heard that the Manufacturing date will be used during the car inspection process, in the future.
I think the game is that if tires are 'old', even if they have thread left that they are not safe due to the rubber drying.
Sounds like the Tire Guys are playing on that. Buy a Plug kit ( SAFETY SEAL) and fix your own. They are worth every penny.

Well, thanks for the heads-up on the build dates of the tires.
I've always wondered how Sam's Club, Walmart, Sears, etc., can sell tires at some cheap rates. Now we all know .....

Just my 2cents. I've bought tires mail order - some guy on the phone, national chains, discount chains,
and a local tire company that has 3 outlets in my county...family business.
They want my business, they want me to come back, they know me. All is all the price difference is not that much considering.

I have never had any luck with patched tires.
Always another slow leak.
I Buy high milege tires at @$45-$65 ea.
No road hazard,no gaurantee,no BS,
just fresh rubber when the gig is up.
My time is worth more than the hassle, grief and worry.
Not to mention the saftey issues of a compromised tire.
Check tire rack, mine came in 2 days.

Ditto the Tire Rack suggestion. Stay away from the big box stores. Sears wanted a lot of money for tires that got some not so great reviews. In short, any place that claims to be discount anything rarely really is. This is especially true for exhaust work... but seems to apply to tires as well.
A local indy shop was happy to mount tires from Tire Rack for us... low price, and they said to just have them shipped direct to their shop. It'll be Kumho's for the 740. I put a set of Toyo Spectrums on the 245, and they're really sweet.
