Well, I've never had any particular disire to own an 1800, but my expereince with "frank" (now a parts car) that I bought from JohnMC made me appreciate the advantages and handling of such a vehicle. Excellent acceleration, very nimble, nice tight shifter.
So, it's with some anticipation that I've found another 1800 in my price range. It's got some of the usual rust (DS floorpan, crossmember gone), and it is the (imho bizzare-looking) 1973 Wagon. It starts and runs, need a little fuel work, but it is an amazing improvement over my old 1800 and in the short term, will likely be more reliable than my still-being-restored, no OD, low mpg 122S. Despite looking pretty nice (no spot-welded or crunched fenders) it is essentially a "beater" that has good restoration potential.
I checked the car out yesterday and it starts and runs well, but there are a couple of fuel related problems:
(1) The main fuel line is rusted and has been temporarily patched.
I'm going to swipe one of the fuel lines from my 1800E parts car for the repair.
(2) The FPR is "inline" on the fuel rail, and leaks gas onto the manifold... yikes!
I'm hoping new clamps and patch hose will correct this. Would using my '71 1800E D-Jet FPR and Injector Rail be an improvement? The 71 has a solid rail and FPR on the heater unit.
There is also some rust around the rear wheel arches. I'm hoping that I can cut the intact arches out of the 1800E (tudor) and let a skilled welder patch them into the ES. Any form-fit problems, I should know about? From my comparisions, the E and ES models are nearly identical except for the areas between the rear fins (i.e. the wagon part) The fin trim itself looks identical to my E's fin trim.
I do not belive this car has been sitting for any great length of time, so the fuel and brake fluid should be fine, but I'll still drain/flush the system to be safe.
Any sage advice on general troubles associated with this model/year?

Sounds kind of rusty.
But you can take that comment with a grain of salt,as I live in Cali.
It will, however carry some cargo, with the rear seat folded.
The drivers door seal may have dried up and failed,by what
you say about floorpan.
See Yankee 1800 thread for my take on FI hoses and clamps.
Leaving injectors in may clog them.]
1/4 panel repair panel has a different part number,
but arches will work.
Fin trim is same,early/late has different clips.
Difficult to remove without distortion.
Make your wooden wedges and bring it straight up.
General Troubles:
True restoration is expensive.
They tend to be $1000-$2500 beaters,or time capsule/garaged,
or solid completely restored $10-$12 Cars.
Need to be garaged, water seems to work it's magic with 1800's.
Jumpy gauges and voltage stabilizer.
General good:
Aerodynamic,handling,aesthecis,B20,M41,Supposedly 1800's are
the 'new' overlooked collectable 'sports car' with reliable mechanicals.
They are actually touring cars not 1/4 milers.
I know, they keep following me home too.

Well, rusty compared to a cali-car, but infinitely more solid than my 71 1800E, which is all but rusted away (and very scarry underneath).
I don't follow your statement about the injectors. They work, but the little connector hoses need to be replaced. They were the little fabric-covered hoses with clamps on them ends (I don't recall if they were good clamps or the cheese-grater variety) I have an injector seal kit from IPD, but the leak at the FPR is what really concerns me. Unburt fuel dripping on the manifold...
I'd be using the car for 30 mile round trip work commutes, half highway, half city. My 1800E used to get around 27+mpg highway, which is much better than the P220.
I have a garage and carport, so protection is available. Maybe I ought to find a car-condom.

The injectors, if left in the 122 while running carbs may
get carboned up.
Everybody here warns me about fuel leaks,so
I try to stay on top of it,and strongly recommend
the correct 8 mm hose.
Out of the rain is fine.
Also the owners manuals recommend hosing the
under body as well as topsides.
1800 on E-Bay is a hot category,byw

I see, you were posting on the other 1800 motor... Walrus gave me the skinny on the soft plugs and it sounds easier than potentially wasting the injectors.
Is there an ideal way to store these things?

Re: Injector storage,
White lithium grease on metal, wrap in rag,
and dry place by water heater.
Also if you get the ES be gentle&careful
with the glass hatch and latch.
5 years ago, somebody overshot the scrap box at
the lumberyard with a 2x4,and, you guessed it,
I got the second to last new one from Volvo
for $600.Now NLA-NOS from Volvo.
Rare Bird's the word on these cars.
Take care, Ken
