AC in a PV 444-544

Yesterday I ordered more parts for my AC installation. I'm using a supplier called Nostalgic Air Parts (http://www.nostalgicairparts.com/). They cater to the street rod guys and have a wide selection of components & kits. Interesting thing is that the owner's dad has a PV that he has installed a system into, so they understand what a PV is. I ordered a hose kit, a dryer, high pressure switch, and a 709 sanden-type compressor. Last thing I'll need to order is the evaporator unit - not sure which way I'll go with that yet. They sell in-dash and under-dash units in cool only or heat & cool versions, the latter providing dehumidified defrost function. But the heat & cool units don't have a fresh air intake like the original Volvo heater. I'll be bettter equipped to make my decision when I'm finished under the hood and have moved on to the cabin.

Previously I ordered the 11 x 19 superflow condenser for my PV. It has flanges that stick out about 1/2" on either end, which prevented it from fitting in front of my radiator, so I cut them off & had some new flanges welded on that were perpendicular to the face of the condenser. These will straddle along the sides of the radiator and just fit between the the radiator & the mounting framework. I had to cut holes through the cowl for the fittings to pass through into the engine bay (right side), but I think I'll have just enough room to fit the condenser in there without having to move the radiator, and also retain the original hood hinge & spring. I have a couple 10" electric fans, but I'll be lucky to fit one. Man, it's getting tight up there!

One last component I need is the idler pulley. This engine had an AC system on it, but the idler was missing. The pulley is not a big thing, but the bracketry that supported it is. If anybody knows of a source for one of these, I'd appreciate any leads - I'll be posting a request in the other forums too.

Appreciate the help,

AC in a PV 444-544

Joe:

Several years ago I saw a PV with air conditioning where the evaporator was mounted inside the heater core box, allowing fresh air into the system and using the car's heater fan to force air, rather than add on a big unit under the dash, where there isn't much space, especially if you want to keep the stock hood latch.

I have the block bosses for mounting an A/C compressor ro my B20, and I could definitely use AC out here. I'm looking at a Datsun pickup truck system, which is very compact to begin with.

I haven't seen the idler pulley you need, but I'm sure someone here nows the part you need and can fix you up.
