Replacing M46 synchros - is it that bad? 700 1989

I know the usual answer to hard shifting trannies is to pull & replace with another, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has actually messed around inside an M46 about just how much of a PITA it really is. My 745T feels like it doesn't have much of a 2'nd gear synchro left - 1'st has just a hint of the grind. Other than that, the tranny shifts great, and it has the desireable P-type OD which also works flawlessly. I have an older iron-cased, J-type M46 right beside the wagon in the garage, but I'd like to avoid using that if I can effect repairs on the existing unit.

I have time. I have a backup Volvo. I have an unnatural desire to make stuff work better. The only thing I fear is the need for too many special tools.
