How much $$ for M41 trans? 120-130

The guy selling me the m41 for my wagon seems like a nice guy and I trust him as he restores a lot of classic Triumphs and is just cleaning out his garage to make space.

I wanted to see what you guys think a fair price for a m41 in nice condition should be...(not sure if the solenoid is working or not, still need to find that out)

He wants $450 and says that the market value is $750. Having only worked on VW's in the past , this seems a bit high.

I don't want to turn it down, but I am a college student / part-time intern, so funds are not unlimited. On the other hand I am in Texas , so finding a M41 locally might be a nightmare.

Thanks,

Tyler

Have you checked for pick-n-pull type yards in your area?

Where are you in Texas? The last time I checked, the Austin area was chock full of Volvos and the wrecking yards there may be as well.

    Tyler,
It is always a crap shoot, but I picked one up at the IPD garage sale a few years ago for $500. The main reason I felt OK about this one was, the owner had paperwork on the OD rebuild from a local shop. The tranny itself had about 30,000 mi. on a rebuild (also had paperwork). Mine has worked great after I got a good solenoid in it. You can find a used one for as little as $45 or as much as $125. Call Mike Dudek at I-Roll motors in Gilroy,CA. He has a good selection of quality parts. Just my 2 cents.
    Cheers

I picked up an M41 last year for $300. Decided I'd rebuild it before installing in my amazon for piece of mind (it was a 'feels good turning, but unknown history' unit). Seals and such for the OD and for the tranny were something like $50-$75. I've dismantled the entire thing, cleaned it up, etc., but have yet to put it all together (so little time!) and get it in the car. One of the bearings is a little rough, so I'm glad I pulled it apart. There are a couple great rebuild articles out there on both the transmission and the OD.

$450 doesn't sound too bad if it's definitely a known-good unit, is clean and everything. When I was looking they all seemed to be 'worked when pulled from the car' and in the $250-$400 range. Proximity became the main issue.

I'm still technically a student as well, so I feel your pain.

    I end-ran my long term parts/upgrade needs by buying a 1971 1800E for <$300.00
It had most of the parts I needed for upgrading, including an M41.

So, you might consider looking for a parts car to meet your needs.

It makes a big difference what your connections are, where you look and
how much of a hurry you are in. The ODs are fairly easy to work on but if
the tranny is shot that is a whole 'nother ball of goo.

I happened to be in Burlington, VT on business back in 1986 and bought a
1975 M41 that had been used in racing and the seals blown for $100 including
a new set of seals. I finally got it put in in about 1987 and it still serves
    well.

I found another one on ebay about 3 years ago for less than $100 which I got
for a spare and it is awaiting the failure of the first one.

I have bought a couple M410s for my 164 and paid about $100 for the first
one and $250 for the second one (from Lucid) but the second one came with
a "free to good home" complete B30F engine in good shape, including all the
D-jet wiring harness and components. They are likewise awaiting installation.
As long as my 164 is running as well as it is (other than some oil mist and
oil consumption) they will continue to wait.

It's all relative I suppose, and as you have already pointed out, greatly dependent upon location. There's an M41 and OD on eBay as we speak that has had, according to the seller, a complete tranny and OD rebuild. He's asking a cool 2800 bucks for the piece, and is apparently convinced it will bring that sort of money; this is the 2nd time it's been listed at that same opening bid. I would consider that to be just a tad steep... they're getting harder to find, but not that hard! ;)

Here in Portland, the local auto recyclers want between $350 with a 90 day warrantee (GR Wrecking) and $900 (another source - without a warrantee). Granted, a wide price range... but for $450 it (seems to me) should be a 'known good' unit.

    Hope that helps.

I guess it really depends on timing and luck. I got a B20E engine and 2 M41 transmissions for $250. The engine and one tranny came from a car I knew ran well. The B20E and M41 now reside in the 122. Pick-Your-Part or Pick-n-Pull yards sell any tranny for under $100 and while you're always taking a chance on parts like that, they do have a 90 day return policy.

Everyone is in a different situation with access to parts or deals on parts. Local prices will almost always reflect accessibility to parts and what the local market will bear. In your location, $450 may be a fair price...

Agreed. Timing is everything. We picked up the B20E and transmission that was pulled out of the Sema 1800 for $200. Would have been a great deal had we been able to get the engine shortly after it was pulled as it apparently ran great. Unfortunately, we picked it up after it had been sitting behind the shop and in the weather for a few months = visible rust on the valves. The transmission and OD, however, work fine after a few miles of driving to get oil back into the bearings.
