Closed vs. open cooling system 120-130

I have found a rad from a '66 122 in excellent condition which I can get fairly inexpensively. Since the rad in our '67 is pretty beatup, I thought this would be a drop-in replacement. Then I discovered that Volvo switched from an open system in '66 to a closed system in '67. Given that this car is eventually going to have a warmed up B20 (<150 h.p.) and that it will be driven mainly in a moderate climate (Vancouver) but with the occasional mountain pass trip, would it be acceptable to revert to an open system or should we modify the '66 rad for closed system operation?
I guess while I'm at it, I should ask if there are any other fitment issues with this rad swap?

Thanks,

Barry

    Closed vs. open cooling system 120-130

    It won't fit without bodging the radiator mounts in the 2 rad panels.

    Also the size of the neck at the top is different, as is the size of the outlet on the early versus late thermostat housing.

    It can all be lashed up, but personally I wouldn't go there unless the car is a dog anyway.

    The operational pressure is the same. The only difference is that the bottle
    gives you a little more reservoir of potentially cooler water.

      On my 121 ('66) I adapt a overflow bottle, but with a 0 psi cap (only a cover)on the bottle as a safety due the rad come from a '62 car. So far so good (no snow on my city on winter,and like california on summer).

      Right! 120-130

      UB;

      George has it right...because its the pressure cap which determines the pressure...and both early and later systems certainly have one of those!....the question you should be asking is not "Closed vs. open", but "open overflow or overflow bottle"...and since overflow bottles are a dime a dozen, and they prevent you from loosing coolant, and the upgrade is simple and cheap, I recommend it.

      See: http://sw-em.com/service%20notes.htm#Cooling%20System

      George; I kinda dissagree with your assertion that the overflow bottle is a "reservoir of potentially cooler water"...because the system expands INTO the bottle as it heats and and the only time any (of that cooler water) comes back into the cooling system is as it cools down after shutdown...so there's not much to be gained in the way of cooling capacity...however, the overflow bottle does selfbleed all the air out of the rad, so the IS a slight gain in cooling system effectiveness there...

      Cheers
