Water pump/alternator alignment problem 1993 240

I am doing major preventative maintenance on our newly acquired 1993 240 wagon and have hit a snag. I've replace the timing belt and seals, replaced the water pump with a GNB pump and replaced the alternator with a NAPA sourced rebuilt unit. Belts are a new set of Continentals from eeuroparts.com.

Now when I put it all together, the rear of the water pump pulley rubs up against the v-belt tensioner assembly of the alternator. The clearance between the back of the pulley and the timing belt cover is also very very small, but they are not touching.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong????

TIA for any help,
John

Did you save the old alt belts? Sounds like the new set is a wrong size.

The two-belt set is to be a matched set. That means they are like twins, cut from adjacent spots in their manufacture. I have never been happy with non-Volvo belts, ecpesially this set. Clerks in whatever parts store assure you that they match, "See - same part number and everything". Not good enough.

    Another problem:
Could be worn accessory mount bushings. There are three in the alternator mount system. One is in the adjustor part that bolts to the block, the other two are in the mount bracket. When the latter two go bad, the alternator can be out of alignment and the belt difficult to adjust.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Thanks Bob. On mine the rubber inside the adjuster where it bolts to the block is free to rotate with respect to it's metal bracket. Is that rubber supposed to be bonded to the bracket? If so, that would explain my problem.

      Thanks again!
      John

Not bonded but a press fit. If they are floating free in the Housing then this will cause the Alternator to shift as you tension the belts.

Look down the Waterpump pulley toward your Alternator pulley ( with the belts on) can you see that the Alternator is slightly cocked. another indication that the Bushings are finished.
