pre-obd-II 900 1996

I have a -96 945 bought in Sewden which has an obd-II connector between the front seat. The problem is that when I connect an obd-II reader, it wont talk to the ECU. When I looked closer at it, the positions of the metal pins in the obd-ii connector does not comply with the obd-ii standard, although the plug fits. I guess that volvo used the same ECU before and after they went obd-ii compliant, and therefore I wonder if the protocol is the same, but pin positions different? Would it be worth to try to change the pin positions?

There are several different (3 I think) "standard" connectors and protocols, looking at the pins or re-arranging them will solve the dilema you face. Volvo uses the the ISO9141 protocol. What king of code reader are you using, some are compatible with all three standards and some are not. I am using a PC based reader that requires a specific cable for ISO9141

pre-obd-II 900 1996

I tried an Actron 9145 scanner. The pins in the 945 -96 obd-ii look-alike connector is 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13 and 16. The standard for obd-ii is

Pin 2 - J1850 Bus+
Pin 4 - Chassis Ground
Pin 5 - Signal Ground
Pin 6 - CAN High (J-2284)
Pin 7 - ISO 9141-2 K Line
Pin 10 - J1850 Bus
Pin 14 - CAN Low (J-2284)
Pin 15 - ISO 9141-2 L Line
Pin 16 - Battery Power

What I hope for is that the protocol used is the same, and that only the pins are different.
