Horn Problem: Precautions when removing horn pad on SRS car? 1993 200

Doug,

I don't post too often with info, cause I'm usually wrong. This time, however, I think I can help. I'm surprised that someone with far more brains than I hasn't answered you by now. They must be busy fixin' their Bricks.

With three 93's, I have had horn problems from the get go. On the first, I replaced the plastic one with the double old unit from the JY. On the second, I actually learned how to pull the steering center section apart and clean the contacts, which made all the difference in the world.

There were a number of posts about how to get to the horn switch, but I've searched the archives to no avail. So I typed 'em up agin. I've got a 3 ring binder of technical tips that often come in handy. Lots of times, even if I've done a job before, I forget and this serves to keep this mushy mind on task as the job progresses. The below procedure worked quite well for me. You should note that the horn switch is normally open to ground.

Disconnect the neg battery cable. Take top and bottom plastic covers off. Get a T-30 and remove the two bolts at the back of your steering wheel. You'll have to turn the wheels left and right to get at them.

Remove the air bag/horn button. Remove the strap/plug from the air bag/horn button. Now take the four bolts out of the vertical metal contacts for the horn. One will have a black wire attached which will fit to the other contact when you switch them. While having these contacts removed, clean the little rivet parts of the contact with a small file, emery paper, etc. Switch the metal vertical bar contacts from one side to the other - for good measure m- makes for a better job.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When reatttaching the air bag/horn button, tighten the right side bolt first. There should be a placard reminding you of this as you're working. Reattach the negative battery cable. Very simple operation. You'll be surprised at how sensitive the horns will be.

Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes for someone who knows what he's doing, 30 minutes for me.

Keep in mind that you indicated that your horns work when you applied 12v with a good ground. So I'm assuming it's your contacts in the horn switch that are your prob. In my case, on my first 93, the horns were very wimpy, I believe a common complaint on the 93's, which led to their replacement. On 93 #2, different story as the horn worked fine when 12v applied.

Good luck, but it's an easy job. Don't be skeered.

Marty Wolfson
