Intermittent bulb failure warning light when brake lights applied 700 1989

I'm getting the bulb failure warning light to come on sometimes for days, sometimes not. Yesterday I pulled all the brake light bulbs out, and when I stepped on the brakes, the warning light still came on! So I switched out all the brake light bulbs with new spares, including the 3rd brake light. It went out. But on my way home from work it came back on, and right now it stays off again. What's going on?

Intermittent bulb failure warning light when brake lights applied 700 1989

I have had this same problem on my 1985 740. I have on different occasions (mostly in the winter months) found the contacts on the bulb holders either oxidized or not making good contact. Try cleaning the three metal prongs on the bulb holder with emery paper. If this does not cure the problem then you may be experiencing the impending failure of the Failed Light Relay. It is Relay A on my 740. Try the FAQ's at http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ElectricalCircuitsRelays.htm#LightsDontWorkBulbOutRelay

    Good Luck
