Engine quits while on the road 700

My 1988 760 GLE quit running while under power yesterday.
I came to a stop sign then drove ahead and the engine quit,
like someone turned off the key, with no sputtering or coughing.
It turns over nicely and starts but stops immediately.
The tank is full of fuel and both fuel pumps are not more
then 2-3 years old. The filter is 1 year old.

-Any thoughts on this problem?

Thanks to all who reply.
Peter

    Hello Peter:
Four candidates in order of likelihood:

    1) RPM reference sensor on top of transmission bellhousing

    2) fuel system relay (resolder or replace)

    3) radio suppression relay (clipped onto coolant recovery tank-- can swap with identical electric fan relay to test)

    4) power stage (ignition amplifier)

Nothing here is expensive, everything is something that you can replace yourself-- the RPM sensor is the only part that requires any contortions to R & R...

Good luck-- let us know what fixes things!

right after it stops, pull a plug wire and check for spark. You could have a failing ignition module- the thing on the driver's side inside fender, behind the headlights. It's easy to replace, and not that expensive.

It might be the engine harness starting to go. My 87 did the same thing before it died a few months later. It started occurring more often, progressively getting harder to start until it finally died permanently. Check the condition of the wires running under the Throttle body by your Idle control motor.
That is where most of them go bad.

Herb, add this to the list you posted.
Be sure the air mass sensor is properly tightened within
      the air hoses.
Mine wasn't, it vibrated off and stalled the engine.

      Thanks again.

I'll bet it's the ignition control module located on the drivers's side fender. Been there done that ~ $100; be sure to use thermal grease to permit heat desipation ( ten minute job, easy to get to, love it). We had same symptoms on 1988 740 w/ 265,000 miles. Just drives along perfectly then quits but easily restarted; city or highway.
