Strut stuff S90-V90

Checked in at my Local Sears Store Sat. to find that my shocks are going to be a few days late-wanted to get at the job yesterday pretty day to do some work.
Question, the struts on the 960 with the springs around them-can the springs be up graded-the ones on mine with 230m miles are weak, can almost pullem down by hand.
Do the struts need to be removed when replaceing the front wheel bearings? Are there any bearings or anything in the top of the struts that I need to be on the lookout for when I change these over? I have never changed out the struts on a veheicle before so all info is welcome as always.
Thanks
Poolman

    Hi Poolman,

The struts don't need to be removed to replace the front wheel bearings.

There is a strut bearing at the top of the strut. I recommend replacing it if your car has more than 100K miles on it.

When you say 'upgrade' the spring. Do you mean replace with a new 'stock' spring or find a stiffer unit? The front coils on our 95 sag quite a bit compared to our 98 as well. I wished I had noticed it before I replaced the struts..... I would have replaced the springs as well.

Replacing the struts is not difficult at all, just use a VERY good spring compressor. When I replaced the struts on the 95 at about 120K I also replaced the strut bearings and the seats as well for the helluvit. I did not R & R the wheel bearings at the time, they felt tight.

Thanks Dewfpo-the front springs seem a little soft-I can grab the spring(while the wheels are turned)and almost pull them from the top of the landings with my hands. I have searched the normal parts companies to no avail in finding replacements. Will other model springs fit here?
I will indeed replace the strut mounts and bearings when I do this job-anything I need to look out for there? I had heard tell of ball bearings falling out of the bearing housing-is this true?
Looks like to me the strut assembly on this model Volvo is probally the easiest to replace-pretty straight forward I hope
      Thanks again

        Hi Poolman,

I would think that NAPA could get springs for this model but I haven't personally tried myself.

When you disassemble the spring from the strut ......if you are not careful the old top bearing will come apart on you and the little ball bearings will go everywhere (ask me how I know). That's how I wound up replacing the bearing along with the first strut I took out. The other side I was more careful and the bearing didn't self explode but I replaced the bearing anyway.

R & R on these is fairly straighforward. The upper bearing is the only part you want to pay particular attention to when removing the spring.
