what year did volvo go to the flush rear window design on teh tailgate? I found a very nice little 89 245 that's really interesting me...they replaced all brake components (master cyl., block that all the lines feed into, calipers, rotors, pads) and the car doesnt even have any rust or dents! theire only asking 2900CAD for the car as well, but on the downside (to my preferences) it has auto, and no a/c :(

    As for it being an Auto, don't let that put you off. I prefer my 85 auto wagon to the 83 M46 now I've learned to power-brake. In fact the 83 is for sale.

        That's what I was told it was called. Left foot on brake, right foot on gas. Transition between the two. Took me quite some practice to get it smooth. As taught me by local Sherrif's Office trainers.

        Not to be used improperly like an old fart with the brake lights on all the time!

          FAR more effective on a turbo car that will build boost when load is applied. n/a cars aren't really going to get much from it, but I've rarely driven an automatic anything, so YMMV.

    I believe it was '90 and not necessarily the same year as the flush windshield, oddly enough (91). But I can't say I am positive. I KNOW i have a '90 tailgate at home and it is flush, and I KNOW my 91 is flush fore and aft.

      1990 was definitely the first year for the flush tailgate glass, and 1991 was the first year for the flush front windshield glass.

      My 1990 245 has the chrome trim on the front, and the flush in the rear! :)

        What about this 90 245 on eBay?

        Appears to be flush at both ends. Then again, this car has the wrong grille, so who knows. The VIN has an "L" in it though, denoting 90. Plus the "240DL" badging and early AC system.

            Yeah, I saw that car on eBay sometime last week. It's probably had it's windshield replaced and receive a later-style one.

            I also noticed that grille when I first looked at the car. I had no idea the pre-'86 grilles could actually fit in the later-style cars--apparently they do! I think it's kind of obvious, though, that it shouldn't be there, and I wouldn't ever want to drive a car looking like that. I'm interested to see how it's staying in place--does the mounting equiptment line up right?

            I assume the car's grille was broken or lost at some point in the past. I would be hesitant about this car's history/maintenance if the "trained Volvo mechanic" or whomever replaced the grille with a completely wrong one.

          A new windshield is often the '91+ style. A friends '83 has a '91+ style flush windshield. My '87 will get one too, if the state ever decides to fail mine with two cracks and 7 star chips...still passed last summer!

            Like a fool, when I went to get my leaky windshield replaced a year ago, I just kept the chrome trim. Not sure why. I suppose I kinda do like the tacky chrome 240 look... but also in southeast Ohio it can be hard to get the right trim and a good windshield guy in the right place at the right time. :)
