center support bearing pressed on by shop 700 1985

I had machine shop take off and press on new bearing into new center support.

When I took it off the car the old bearing and support spun effortlessly around the half shaft.

The new one when installed didn't spin freely at all.

The press guy claimed that the dust caps where catching on the rubber of new support and after a little while will wear away some of it and it will then spin freely as the old one.

Is this guy BS ing me ?

He also mentioned old bearing was still good.....i guess the whirr I was hearing was the rubber from the old support turning in the hanger.

getting driveline vibration as well.....I painted lines on the shaft, flex disc, differential etc. I was a tooth off first time but i ran it while it was still up on blocks. I lined it up real good the second time but and didn't notice any vibration while up on blocks. I test drove it and I'm still getting vibration.

The old ones will spin very freely as the grease dries up & gets flung out, and as the seals wear. The new one will feel sticky - there'll be a bit of resistance - but shouldn't be notchy. The combination of grease packed into the bearing and new seals makes a new bearing feel a bit stiff, so it won't spin freely like the old one.

Chris

You know how to make a guy feel comfortable with the bizzare would of auto reapir.

I believe it will be ok then. It's just so difficult to trust mechanics sometimes.

Any short cuts to finding proper driveshaft alignment if when I'm under there everthing(markings painted on) appears to line up? or is it trail and error.

I thought all 700s had a master splined driveshaft - meaning it could only go together one way, because one spline is larger than all the others. I believe on initial factory assembly the components are marked with a punch to indicate their relative alignment, usually that little dimple is obscured with rust, grime, paint, etc. The best recourse at this point is to carefully read through the FAQ section on 700 driveline vibration. It's funny how Volvo missed the mark here, so many 700s have that unsettling shudder taking off, or thumping under load...
