92 960 wagon 900 1992

Hello to all----I have been reading with great interest, the various questions from a lot of people and Iam starting to wonder what I have gotten myself in for. I mentioned in an earlier posting that I had just purchased a 92 960 wagon in what I consider to be excellent condition,158kms, rides very well. Has a leak somewhere in the coolant system, drops about 1.5 liters a week. I have had many cars over the last 45 years and this is my first volvo. It is nice to know that there is alot of knowledge out there to help with problems, but I'm beginning to wonder If I have made a mistake. At the risk of drawing immediate deadly fire on myself, what may I ask are some of the good things about these cars. Obviously there is a big fan club out there. Appreciate some thoughts.

First thing. Change the timing belt on that car if it has not been replaced yet or if you don't know. First part of the production year had a 1 inch timing belt prompt to failure. Then change every 30,000 miles. I do mine every 20,000 because I do it my self for extra peace of mind. Also there is a flap in the air intake box under the air filter. Fix the flap permanently open to fresh air only. The thermostat that operates the flap fail on these models and will overheat the intake causing the failure of power stages. Expensive little electronics. See if you can locate the water leak when you return from driving. let the engine cool a bit, but not too much that will lose water pressure, locate the hoses to the heater by the fire wall and radiator hoses, If you do not detect leak it could very well be tiny pin holes in the radiator. Check the oil dip stick and make sure there is not water in the oil. Replace the radiator if every thing else seems normal. The radiator on this car has a life of about 125,000 miles. Other than that you have a tank for many more years.

      >>>> At the risk of drawing immediate deadly fire on myself,

      Volvo people aren't like that.

      >>>> what may I ask are some of the good things about these cars.

Big & comfortable, safe, lots of hauling capability, a great looking vehicle (biased opinion, of course), girls / women will swarm over you whenever you stop asking you about the car, easy to work on, capability to haul seven (if you have the jump seat in the back).

And as mentioned in the post above be sure to change the timing belt, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong on this but you have an intereference engine which means that if your timing belt snaps, you've just messed up your engine really bad (as opposed to the 940's engine which, if the timing belt snaps, won't hurt the engine but will just leave you stranded by the side of the road).
