Difficult-to-diagnose occasional hard start 200 1988

I've been keeping notes for several weeks on a very occasional difficult start on my 88 244. For the most part it starts immediately, hot or cold. But once in a while (no more than once or twice a week or so) it takes significantly longer to start, like 5-10 seconds. It's never failed to start, it just takes longer than usual. As far as I can tell, this has nothing to do with:

  • engine hot, warm, or cold
  • weather wet or dry
  • weather warm (75 F) or cool (40 F)
  • full tank or below half
  • where it's parked (parking lot, under trees, or garage)
  • time of day

I can't figure out whether this is a warning sign of something, or "just one of those things". Any ideas?

If your 88 has the LH 2.2 system like my 86, then there is no pump prime as the key is turned to the KII position like the later models. The pumps fire up when the starter is engaged. I had an intermittant problem once ,like you describe, when the idle air control valve was weak and/or sticking and slow to open. Bought a cheapie off of eBay to correct.

That may be true; at least I can't hear any pump noise prior to the starter even when it starts instantly. Have to delve into Bentley this weekend to see if there are any details there. Thanks!

any idea whether you do or do not hear the Fuel pumps kick on prior to starting?

For a while, turn the key to on so you can hear the Fuel pump run for it's short interval, then turn the key to Start it.
See if sometimes you do not hear it.

It could be an intermittent Fuel pump relay.

Is the car running rich at all. MAybe the fuel regulator is causing the fuel to run back into the tank occasionally
