Rotor and Distributor Question 200 1985

I'm having problems and I'm digging deeper in my mess! My 85 240DL wouldn't start. After some very novice troubleshooting I discovered the Dist. Rotor was all corroded so I replaced it. Problem was, I didn't mark (or note) what direction I pulled the darn thing out of. So I've been just blindly trying different posistions with the new one but still the engine won't engage. Any way to figure out how it goes back on correctly before I run my battery completely dead?

Hoping to hear back before I pull any more hair out!

Rotor and Distributor Question 200 1985

Thanks all for the help!
Once in the daylight I could see the notch on the rotor and install properly. Still turned over but couldn't start until I replaced the Dist cap (should have done that at the same time). Fired right up after that!
Happy driving for you guys that responded.

It only goes one way -- there's a notch that has to fit to slip all the way on (n.m.i.) 200 1985

Rotor and Distributor Question 200 1985

Make sure that you have the correct replacement rotor, compare it with your old one. I believe there were two different ( 10mm and 14mm shafts?) ones for the 85's.

Look at the notch at the top of the dist shaft. The rotor has a corresponding bump that will fit it.

The dist cap has a bump which matches the notch in the dist housing.
