1985 240GL headlight problem!! 200 1985

I have an 85 244 GL and my Low beam on passenger side of the car doesnt work, but when i turn on the high beams all four come on and work fine. I used a test light and there is no power going to the passenger lowbeam headlight when their should be. Where should i check? or what should I replace? The relay clicks and the brights work fine and so does the driver low beam. Any help that you could give me would be much appreciated. THanx

You have a total of four rectangular headlamps, correct?

Replace low beam lamp on passenger side.

Verify the suggestion befoe buying bulbs (if you like) by swapping low-beam bulbs between left and right. The problem will move along with the bulb if this is correct.

Reason why I figure this is your problem:
Low beam bulbs in this setup have two filaments. One lights when you select low beam. The other lights - along with the high beam lamp - when you select high beam. Your "normal" low-beam filament is apparently burned out, but the second one that is used only along with the high beams is still OK.

This is based on the lighting schematic for "Typical 1984-1986 headlight circuit diagram" on p. 12-30 of the Haynes 240 book. So far as I know the '86 cars had the LATER design that they call "1987 and later", but if your car has the 4 rectangular headlamps then the circuit they show (as '84-'86) should be what you have.

Low beams are on the BFW system. When the low beams are on, do you get the BFWS warning light on the dash?

You checked for voltage at the harness connector that hooks onto the bulb, right?

Have you got a "known good" hi/low bulb to install as a check? Usually when my 240s pre-1986 has this failing, it was the bulb.

Good Luck,

Bob

The wiring for each side goes back to separate contacts on the BFW relay, which is under the dash near the left vent. It is round. It may be faulty, or the wiring may be.

I think if the problem was in just one side of the BFW sensor (before, inside, or after), it would cause a warning light — which I expect is coming on. Bob (B.C.) asked about the BFW light, but didn't get an answer.

But up thru '86 (according to the diagrams) the High and Low beam power comes thru a 2-pin plug some 12" to 15" away from the bulb, and that a bad connection there could be the problem.
I know I've seen it on '83 and '80 240s.

2-pin connector - me too. 200 1985

2-pin connector caused no-light on my '86 till I found that bad connector.
As lucid/Bruce Young wrote, it's a bit more than one foot back from the hedlight teminal connector.

Bulb out warning will normally signal if one of a pair of left-right low-beams is bad. However, many have been disabled due to previous owner didn't want to chase down all those warnings.

When you start the car and all the "idiot lights" light up, the bulb failure warning light should go on with the rest of them. If it does not, it's been disabled. Looks like a light bulb with an "X" through it. Orange, if I recall.

Earlier cars used a chime or buzzer, if I understand correctly. I'm pretty sure yours is late enough to use a warning lamp on the instr. cluster.
