If you are handy you can convert the instrument housing to a '90 and newer housing retaing your original guages. You need to just swap out the speedo and tach, temp or fuel guage if necessary.

By converting it to a '90 or newer you can reset the light from the lower right hand corner of the face of the instrument cluster using a piece of white wire hanger.

Can be done without pulling the cluster...

You have to drop the felt cover under the cluster and reach in carefully behind the speedometer - to the left side of it - and push the spring-loaded lever firmly and release it.

Better if you can see what it looks like first: Click here for 128Kb image The lever is just to the right of the 299 mark on the back of the speedometer.

Look for another recent post on the same subject. JohnG has a secret involving electrical tape he might share with us. http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo-1003523.html

There is a lever on the back of the speedometer unit that you can reach without pulling the instrument panel. You should be able to locate it by feel. Push the lever up. It will return to the down position. Service light reminder is then reset.
Also, find another shop.

How often is this light set to come on? I've driven my 89 some 14,000 miles and it has just come on recently.

According to the owner's book the light will come on at 5K mile intervals. No idea why yours would skip a couple of cycles.

The spring popped off the worm/gear assembly next to the reset light. 200

Yes that is the spring that holds the service light worm drive to the wheel to record the miliage from the speedo to trip the service light. If the spring comes loose the service light wheel won't rotate and trip the sensor @ 5k miles.
