Intermittent starting problems 200 1986

I'm having an intermittent starting problems with my 86 240 wagon. Every now and then I am unable to get the car started when it's cold. The starter cranks but the engine doesn't catch. What usually happens is that after waiting around 10 minutes or so the car starts right up. If I have been driving and the engine is warm this is never a problem. Yesterday the car wouldn't start all day. The starter would crank but the engine wouldn't catch. It's almost like there is no gas in the car. I was going to get it towed to the mechanic today but when I tried it one last time this morning it started right up. I can't figure out what is the problem. If the starter wasn't working it wouldn't be intermittent problem and the same goes for the fuel pump I believe. I don't want to take the car to the mechanic and have them start replacing everything and hope that works while draining my wallet.
As far as recent work on the car. I replaced the engine wiring harness and voltage regulator within the last three months.
From what I've heard changing the fuel pump is pretty tough especially being that i live in an apartment and would have to do the job in the street. Also, since I don't know what the problem is I would probably spend a pretty good amount of money and time trying to fix it myself or just a lot of money at a mechanic. Since the problem only happens every now and then I don't know how they would fix it except by just starting to replace stuff.
One way or another I need to fix this problem as I want to drive the car down to Texas and back from Los Angeles in the near future and don't want to get stuck on the side of the road.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Scott
