My guess is that it is a 68 or later B18 block, which is externally very
much like the B20 block. That is indeed an alternator mounting ear and
you are doing it right.
I'll bet your block also has the bolt holes for the lower bellhousing bracket
for the later bellhousing that has big bolt holes in the lower part rather
than the 1/4" bolt holes for the tin shield on earlier models.
