Your solution sounds to be effective to me.

How long ago did you do that? If it is still working, that is the way to go.

To be honest, the leak I see in the steering pump appears to come from the suction hose:

Since I need to remove the pump to re-align it, I was thinking to have it properly checked, but it appears this is not possible here in NA.
