2001 S-60 TCM

My 2001 S-60 recently went into "limp mode". I am checking a few things, but had a question about the TCM. If it turns out that this is the bad part, can I just replace it with a used or new one? Or does the "new" TCM have to be reprogrammed to match my vehicle? I have not contacted a Volvo dealer to ask them this yet. I figured I'd ask here first.
Also, do I have to take the ECM out first in order to get the TCM out, or can I use the special tool (which I borrowed from a friend) to just take the TCM out with leaving the ECM untouched.
Initially thoughts are that the issue is either the TCM and/or the input and output speed sensors and/or the wiring of this based on tests done with scan tools with Volvo software. I am going to pull the TCM out and test the board first, then go from there...
Thanks in advance!
