If you live in a state with a smog inspection, it will not pass if the Check Engine light is disconnected.

Code readers have gotten pretty cheap. Kragen/Checker/Schucks sells a good one for $129 with a$30 rebate. With the code reader, you can find out for yourself why the light came on AND turn the light off.
